How Often Should I Clean My Dryer Vent?

By | Dryer Vent Cleaning and Maintenance | One Comment

Maintaining your dryer vent is a matter of safety. Lint that gets trapped inside the vent that leads from your dryer to the outside can pose a fire hazard. Lint is highly flammable and having an excessive amount inside your dryer exhaust pipe can increase your risk of fire. The Federal Government publishes a pamphlet to educate the public and set standards and guidelines for dryer safety.

  • Clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry. Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can build up. In addition, clean the lint filter with a nylon brush at least every six months or more often if it becomes clogged.
  • Clean lint out of the vent pipe every three months.
  • Have your dryer cleaned regularly by a professional, especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry. (U.S. Fire Safety Administration)

While the above states to clean your dryer vent pipe every three months, the professional cleaning doesn’t have a timeline. As a professional in the industry I think it’s a good idea to have your dryer vent cleaned professionally at least once a year but many times insurance companies require biannual cleanings.

In addition to posing a safety hazard, a clogged dryer vent can effect your dryer’s performance. If you find your dryer is not drying as efficiently, first check and make sure your heating element is working properly. If your dryer is getting hot enough but still not drying, then it is probably time to have your vent cleaned.
